The C-1 train runs direct from beneath Terminal 3 to Fuengirola in 34 minutes for about €3. That's a genuinely good option and we'll say so plainly. This page is about the times it isn't — and there are more of them than the timetable suggests.

The gap that catches people out is the return. One overnight train leaves Fuengirola around 00:20, then nothing until roughly 06:10 — reaching the airport at about 06:43. If your flight home is before 08:30, the train isn't an option at all.

Train or transfer — how to decide
Every other page in our Málaga network says some version of "there is no train". This one can't, because there is, and it's good. The C-1 is one of the best-value airport links in Spain and Fuengirola is its terminus. On price it wins and it isn't close: four people pay about €12 between them against €39 for a car.
So the question isn't which is cheaper. It's whether the €27 difference buys you something you need on the day you land.

How much is a taxi from Málaga Airport to Fuengirola?
This is one of the shortest mainstream runs on the coast, so the numbers are small and the margins are thin. Málaga Airport uses a closed destination tariff: Tariff 1 Monday to Friday 06:00–22:00, Tariff 2 at weekends, on public holidays and on weekday nights from 22:00. There's no toll on this route — the AP-7's charged section begins further west.

We're not going to pretend the maths flip
Some transfer sites argue that once you're four people the train stops making sense on cost. It doesn't — four singles is about €12 against €39, and six people on the train is roughly €18 against €55. The train stays cheaper at every group size. What changes is everything around the fare: the hour you're travelling, what you're carrying, and whether your accommodation is anywhere near a platform. Those are the reasons to book a car, and they're good ones. Price isn't.
What the train is actually like
The airport station sits directly outside Terminal 3, two or three minutes' walk from arrivals and signed from the concourse. Fuengirola is the end of the line, so you can't miss the stop, and trains run every 20 to 30 minutes through the day.

Four stations, not one
Worth checking before you decide: the line serves Carvajal, Torreblanca and Los Boliches before the Fuengirola terminus. If your hotel is on the seafront at Los Boliches or up at Carvajal, you're a short walk from a platform and the train is even more obviously the right call. If you're inland, on the Mijas Costa side, or up the hill in Mijas Pueblo, none of those help you.
Where the train stops being an option
Almost everyone plans the inbound and assumes the return is the same journey backwards. On this route it isn't, and the difference is nearly six hours wide.
A single overnight service leaves Fuengirola at around 00:20. After that there is nothing until roughly 06:10, arriving at the airport at about 06:43. Set that against a departures board where the early bank of UK, German and Scandinavian flights leaves from 06:30 onwards, and a large share of holidaymakers in Fuengirola simply cannot use the train to get home.

If your return falls in the first two rows, book the car when you book the arrival. Rank taxis in Fuengirola at 04:15 are not something to rely on in changeover season, and the fixed price doesn't rise because it's dark.
Buggies, cots and the road up to Mijas
With one bag the C-1 is easy. With a young family it's a different experience. There are no luggage racks, so cases stay in the aisle or on your knees. Pushchairs have to be folded when carriages fill. The lifts at the airport station exist but aren't always working. And the walk from platform to street is longer than the map suggests when you're carrying a travel cot and a car seat as well.
For a family landing in August with a week's luggage and children who've been on a plane for three hours, a driver who meets you in arrivals and loads the boot is worth the €27 difference. That's the whole argument, and it doesn't need dressing up as a saving.

Yes — the white village about 8 km up the hill, roughly 35 minutes from the airport. No railway to it and no rank at night, so it's one of the places here where booking ahead genuinely matters.
