Malaga Taxi Fares Explained: 2026 Tariff Bands & Rates

Malaga taxi meter displaying tariff band and fare rate
receipt_long 2026 rates · Six bands · Five supplements

Málaga has no flat airport fare. What it has is one of the most detailed tariff structures in Andalusia — six bands, three separate airport minimums, five supplements, and an annual increase that has now run four years in a row. This decodes all of it.

bolt The short answer

There is no flat airport fare in Málaga

Barcelona has a single flat airport rate. Málaga doesn't. Its taxis run on the meter, and the meter runs on one of six bands — chosen automatically by the time of day, the day of the week, and where your journey starts. There is no driver discretion in which band applies.

Three of those bands exist only for journeys starting at the airport: T4, T5 and T9. Each carries a minimum fare, and five separate supplements can be added on top. Nobody landing on a Saturday night with two suitcases is paying the daytime headline rate they saw on a comparison site.

pin

Check the digit on the meter

The taximeter face shows a small number — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 9 — telling you which band is running. Look at it as you get in. If you're at the airport on a Tuesday afternoon and it reads 5 or 9, ask the driver to explain before you set off. You are not obliged to pay a higher band than the one applicable to your journey.

table_rows The six bands

Which band applies, and when

Málaga's City Council sets the tariff annually; the 2026 rates came into force in January. They split into two groups: urban and interurban bands (T1–T3) for journeys starting in the city, and airport bands (T4, T5, T9) for journeys starting at AGP. The per-km rates pair up — T4 uses T1's rate, T5 uses T2's, T9 uses T3's.

vertical_align_bottom The airport minimum

It's a floor, not an extra charge

This is the single most misunderstood part of the Málaga tariff, and plenty of websites get it wrong. The airport minimum is not added to your metered fare. It's the lowest amount the meter can show at the end of the journey. You pay whichever is higher — the minimum, or what the meter actually ran up.

It exists because a driver queues at the airport rank, sometimes for 30 to 45 minutes in peak season, before picking anyone up. The minimum compensates for that wait regardless of where you're going.

When the minimum bites

A hotel two kilometres from the terminal on a Wednesday afternoon. The meter would show around €3, but you pay the T4 minimum of €18.24. There is no such thing as a cheap airport taxi in Málaga, even for a very short hop.

When it's irrelevant

Anything down the coast. By Fuengirola the meter has long passed every minimum, so the figure makes no difference at all to what you pay. On those journeys, the per-kilometre rate is the only number that matters.

schedule

Ten minutes can change your band

Land on a Friday at 21:55 and you're on T4 at €1.05 a kilometre. Land at 22:05 the same evening and you're on T5 at €1.25, with the night supplement on top. Over 60 km that's about €14 for a ten minute difference in when your flight touched down — and no part of it is at the driver's discretion.

add_circle Supplements

Every supplement, in one table

These are charges added to the metered fare at the end of the journey. They aren't hidden — they must be itemised on your receipt. Knowing them is the difference between checking your fare and guessing at it.

Málaga taxi supplements, 2026.
Supplement Amount When it applies
Airport pick-up ~€5.50 Journey starts at AGP — separate from the minimum, both apply
Airport drop-off ~€6.49 Journey ends at AGP — you're travelling to the airport
Large luggage €0.58 each Per item over 60 cm. Smaller bags travel free
Night supplement €2.23 Applied on T2, T3, T5 and T9 journeys
Feria supplement €4.43 Feria de Málaga week only, 15–22 August 2026
Large vehicle €2.79 From the fifth passenger onwards
Port / Maritime Station €9.45 min Journeys starting at the Málaga cruise terminal
FYCMA trade fair €10.35 min Journeys starting at the Málaga congress centre
accessible

What travels free

Bags under 60 cm, wheelchairs, guide dogs and approved assistance animals, and pushchairs. None of this is at the driver's discretion — the city ordinance requires them to be carried at no charge. A driver attempting to charge for a wheelchair is committing an offence.

Indicative only. The meter also charges waiting time in slow traffic, which this cannot predict, and distances are approximate. The 2026 revision raised rates by 3.5–5% over 2025.

Same road, same two suitcases, about €23 apart — and during Feria week the Saturday figure goes past €90. None of that is the driver. It's the band and the night supplement, both applied automatically by the meter. Add slow traffic through Fuengirola on an August evening and the waiting-time charge widens the gap further.

trending_up The 2026 increase

What changed, and who decided it

Rates were last frozen in 2021. Since then there have been four consecutive annual increases. The 2026 revision was proposed by AUMAT, the unified Málaga taxi association, at 3.5–5% depending on band, and approved by the city's mobility committee with PP and Vox votes; PSOE and Con Málaga abstained.

The consumer association FACUA objected, arguing that a fourth consecutive rise — around 18% cumulatively since 2021 — placed a disproportionate burden on regular users and visitors at a time of elevated living costs. The associations countered that fuel, maintenance, insurance and labour had risen comparably. The council sided with the associations, and the new rates entered force in January 2026.

How to check you were charged correctly

Málaga's system has three transparency tools that almost no passenger uses.

sticky_note_2

The tariff sticker

Every licensed taxi displays its current schedule on a window sticker, readable from inside. Check the T4, T5 and T9 figures before you set off.

The receipt

Ask for a ticket or factura. It must show the licence number, the holder's NIF, date, time, total and every supplement itemised.

Hoja de reclamaciones

Every driver must carry the official complaints form. Asking for it is itself a formal act. Fill it in before you leave the vehicle and keep your copy.

balance Fixed vs meter

Where each one wins

These aren't competing products on the same terms, and it would be dishonest to pretend one is always better. Here's the straight version.

Situation Metered rank taxi Fixed pre-booked
Short hop into Málaga, weekday €18.24 minimum — the better option Dearer, but the driver meets you inside
Arriving off-peak with no plans made Walk out, cab waiting — best option Has to be booked in advance
Marbella, Tuesday afternoon (T4) ≈ €63 metered Comparable, with a confirmed car
Marbella, Saturday 23:00 (T9) ≈ €86 and rising with traffic Cheaper, and it can't move
Family of four, four cases Fare + €2.32 luggage, no guaranteed child seat Child seats free, vehicle size guaranteed
Feria week or a peak August Saturday 20–30 min rank queue, T9 + Feria + luggage Price holds regardless

The meter wins on walk-up availability and for short journeys off-peak. A fixed price wins on the long western runs, at nights and weekends, for families with luggage, and any time the band would otherwise add twenty or thirty euro to the figure you had in mind. Fixed prices by destination are on the Málaga Airport taxi page.

quiz FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is there a fixed taxi fare from Málaga Airport? expand_more

No. Unlike Barcelona's flat airport rate, Málaga runs the meter under three airport bands — T4 weekday daytime, T5 nights and weekends, T9 special festive nights — with minimums of €18.24, €22.48 and €25.80. A pre-booked private transfer is the only way to know the price before you travel.

Is the airport minimum added to my metered fare? expand_more

No — it's a floor. You pay whichever is higher, the minimum or the metered amount. It bites on a short hop near the terminal and makes no difference at all on any journey down the coast.

What are the 2026 rates? expand_more

Urban: T1 €4.65 minimum and €1.05/km; T2 €5.61 and €1.25/km; T3 €6.40 and €1.43/km. Airport: T4 €18.24 minimum at €1.05/km, T5 €22.48 at €1.25/km, T9 €25.80 at €1.43/km. Supplements apply on top.

Why was my Málaga taxi more expensive than expected? expand_more

Things compound. A weekend or post-22:00 arrival puts you on T5 or T9 rather than T4, changing the per-kilometre rate. Luggage over 60 cm is €0.58 an item, the night supplement is €2.23, and Feria adds €4.43. A family of four on a Saturday night with four cases can see €20–30 of supplements alone.

Does Málaga charge extra for luggage? expand_more

€0.58 per item over 60 cm — roughly standard roll-along size and above. Smaller bags are free, as are wheelchairs, guide dogs, assistance animals and pushchairs. Those are ordinance requirements, not favours.

How do I complain about an overcharge? expand_more

Ask for the hoja de reclamaciones before leaving the vehicle and take a receipt showing licence number, date, time, total and supplements. Complaints go to the Instituto Municipal del Taxi via Málaga City Hall; financial disputes to the Juntas Arbitrales del Transporte. Photograph the plate first.

When does the Feria supplement apply? expand_more

Feria de Málaga week, 15–22 August 2026 — €4.43 on top of the tariff and all other supplements. The T2 schedule also runs 06:00–20:00 during Feria instead of the usual T1 hours.

Skip the six bands

A pre-booked transfer is the same price on a Tuesday afternoon and a Saturday night. No T9, no Feria supplement, no luggage add-ons, and a driver inside T3 arrivals with your name.
