Girona Airport sits 12 km south of Girona city, near the village of Vilobí d'Onyar. It's the second-most important entry point into the Barcelona area and the principal gateway to the Costa Brava. The airport is small and quiet compared with Barcelona El Prat — most passengers are outside within 15 to 25 minutes of landing, which makes it one of the most hassle-free airports in Spain.

GRO has a single, two-storey terminal. Ground floor handles arrivals — baggage reclaim, car rental desks, a tourism information point, an ATM, and the taxi rank directly outside the exit. The first floor handles departures. The terminal is divided informally into three departure zones: Central (WHSmith, Ale-Hop, free Wi-Fi, an outdoor terrace bar), South (for UK and post-Brexit passport-control flights, with a café and outdoor chessboard terrace), and North (Burger King, outdoor terrace).
Facilities include free unlimited Wi-Fi throughout, a VIP lounge, several cafés and restaurants, duty-free shops, car rental counters from Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Goldcar and Thrifty, and a multi-storey 3,600-space car park directly in front of the terminal. Short-stay parking costs approximately €1.20 per hour. Accessibility ramps and adapted toilets are available.

Girona Airport is dominated by Ryanair, which operates the overwhelming majority of routes from UK, Irish, Polish, Italian and Scandinavian cities. The airport is particularly popular with British travellers flying from London Stansted, London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, East Midlands and Birmingham. Other carriers operate seasonal charter services aligned to summer Costa Brava holidays.
Because Ryanair coordinates its bus connections to coincide with flight arrivals, public transport is easier to use than at many airports — the buses wait for the planes rather than running on a fixed clock. However, this also means there are gaps in the timetable when no flights operate, which is why pre-booking a transfer matters for late-night or early-morning arrivals.

Official yellow taxis wait directly outside the arrivals exit. The Girona municipal tariff applies: €0.80 per km daytime, €0.87 per km at night/weekends, plus a €4.50 airport supplement. To the city centre expect €30–€35 by day, €35–€40 at night or on Sundays.
The queue can run short late at night — the airport is small and there are rarely more than 5–8 taxis waiting. For popular resort towns like Lloret de Mar, prices run €55–€70 by meter and drivers are sometimes reluctant to take long runs at the end of their shift.

Cheapest option for solo travellers going to Girona city or Barcelona
Airport bus to Girona city centre
Operated by Sagalés (Line 607), buses stop ~50 metres to the right of the terminal exit. They run approximately every hour from 04:00 to midnight, coordinated with flight arrivals — the bus waits if a scheduled flight is operating. The ride to Girona bus/train station takes 25–30 minutes.
Note: Service is suspended on 24 Dec, 26 Dec, 31 Dec and 1 Jan. Card payment accepted on board since June 2026.
Barcelona Bus (GRO → Barcelona Estació del Nord)
A separate direct coach service runs from Girona Airport to Barcelona's Estació del Nord (Arc de Triomf), operated by Barcelona Bus / Sagalés in coordination with flight arrivals — primarily Ryanair schedules.
Best for: Solo travellers or couples going to central Barcelona on a budget. Not suitable if you have a lot of luggage or are travelling with children.
Train from Girona Airport
There is no train station at GRO — you must connect via Girona city first
Girona Airport has no train connection. The airport is not on the rail network. To travel by train, you must first take the airport bus (Line 607, €2.15, 30 min) or a taxi to Girona city bus/train station, then board a train from there.
Girona station → Barcelona Sants
Once at Girona station, two train options exist. The Rodalies regional train (R11) takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours and costs €6–€11. The AVE/Avant high-speed train takes just 38 minutes and costs €15–€50 depending on how far in advance you book.
Is train the right option?
The train is a good choice if you are going to central Barcelona and travelling light — one carry-on, comfortable on public transport. The bus + AVE combo (€24–€72 total) is sometimes faster than the direct bus to Barcelona (€22) and is especially good if you want to explore Girona city during a layover.
The train is not recommended for families with young children, anyone with large suitcases, anyone heading to a coastal resort (the train goes inland to Barcelona, not to the Costa Brava), or arrivals after 22:30 when buses to Girona are infrequent.
Rental car from Girona Airport

Car rental desks are available in the arrivals hall (Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Thrifty) and in the garage directly opposite the terminal (Goldcar and others). The 3,600-space multi-storey car park is 10 metres from the terminal entrance and has 10 automatic and 2 manual payment machines.
Driving from GRO is straightforward. The N-II main road and AP-7 motorway give easy access to Girona city, the coast, and Barcelona. The AP-7 motorway is tolled. For exploring the Costa Brava — where resort towns are spread across winding coastal roads not well served by public transport — a car is the best option.

Shared shuttle transfers

Several operators (Holiday Extras, Hoppa) offer shared minibus shuttles from Girona Airport to resort towns, particularly along the Costa Brava — Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Calella and others. Prices start from around £12–£15 per person, which undercuts a private transfer for solo travellers but costs more than the bus for couples or groups.
The main drawback of shared shuttles is journey time. Because the minibus collects and drops off multiple groups at different hotels — often in a wide geographical spread — a 30-minute transfer can take 90 minutes to 2 hours.
