A rank taxi is about €28 by day and €33 at night on the meter, according to the Basque Government’s indicative tariff. Our fixed price is €39 per car for up to 3 passengers, agreed in advance and including a driver with a name board.
15–20 minutes for about 12 km in normal traffic, and 35–55 minutes in the weekday rush, roughly 08:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:00. The airport is in Loiu, north of the city.
No. The Bizkaibus A3247 runs between the airport and the city centre, and a few other intercity bus lines also serve the airport. For a door-to-door ride, use a taxi or a pre-booked transfer.
Directly outside the arrivals hall, signposted Taxi, and taxis are available 24 hours a day. After 22:00, and on Saturdays and public holidays, the higher night tariff applies.
Usually not to the city centre: the meter is lower than our €39. On the long runs the picture is mixed: our San Sebastián fare of €150 is close to the rank tariff, while Vitoria and Santander cost less on the meter.
No extra charge: we track your flight number, so a delay simply moves the pickup. Up to 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included at Bilbao, as shown in your quote.
In the arrivals hall, where your driver waits with a name board. Your confirmation gives the driver’s details and the exact meeting point, which follows the airport’s pickup rules.
Only if you arrive from outside the Schengen area. The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and a first registration adds time. Flights from Spain and Schengen countries skip passport control.

Rank taxis from the airport charge Tariff 3 on weekdays between 07:00 and 22:00 and Tariff 4 on Saturdays, public holidays and at night. The figure on the meter depends on the distance, the traffic and the waiting time, so any table is a guide, including this one.

How it works
It takes a few minutes to book. Here is what happens next.
It is the field that matters most. We follow the real landing time, so a late arrival or an early one changes nothing for you.
Before pickup you receive the driver’s name, mobile number and the meeting point. Keep your phone on when you switch off flight mode.
Passport control and baggage can take longer than planned, and up to 60 minutes of waiting after landing are included at Bilbao. If you are held longer, message the driver.
You pay securely online when you book, and your confirmation is emailed once the payment is processed. The fare on it is the fare you pay.
The bus
Bilbao has no train or metro at the airport, but it does have a frequent bus into the city, and a few intercity lines.
The Bizkaibus A3247 is the direct bus between the airport and central Bilbao. A journey takes about 15–35 minutes depending on the traffic. You can pay on board with a contactless bank card, or use a Barik card for a lower fare.
From the airport the last bus leaves around midnight in summer, but from the city to the airport it stops at about 22:00 and starts at about 05:00. For a very early flight or a late arrival, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the reliable option.

The most common booking mistake at an airport is a sedan for four adults with four large suitcases. Four people fit. Four people and four large cases do not.

Count each pushchair, golf bag and surfboard as a bag, and tell us at booking. Child seats are available on request at no extra cost: give us the children’s ages and we fit the right ones before you arrive.
Low-emission zone
Central Bilbao has a low-emission zone. It matters if you drive yourself, and it is no extra cost or paperwork if a driver takes you.
Bilbao has had a low-emission zone (ZBE) in force since 15 June 2024, covering the central Abando district. It limits access, driving and parking for the most polluting vehicles, according to the environmental label of the national traffic authority (DGT).
Vehicles with a 0, ECO or C label may enter. Vehicles with no label are excluded, and since 15 June 2025 so are vehicles with a B label, in the restricted hours (reported as weekdays during working hours: check the city’s page). Cameras read number plates, so no sticker is needed.
The restriction is on the vehicle, not on you, so you need do nothing, and it never changes a fixed fare. If you hire a car yourself, check its label before you drive into the centre; foreign-registered cars are classified by an equivalence with the Euro standard.

Arriving
Bilbao has a single terminal, small and easy to read. Here is what happens between touchdown and your seat in the car, and how the official rank works if you have not booked.
If you have not pre-booked, the official taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals hall, signposted Taxi, and taxis are available around the clock.
Bilbao taxis are white with a red stripe and carry a roof light and a meter. Check that the meter starts at the base fare before you pull away, and ask for a receipt.
Many rank taxis take cards, but not every driver or machine works, so carry some euros as a fallback. Tipping is not expected in Spain: rounding up is the local habit.
English is not guaranteed with rank drivers. Have your address written down, in Spanish or Basque.
Luggage within the vehicle’s capacity is not charged as an extra in Bilbao taxis. Free Wi-Fi covers the terminal, so you can confirm your pickup before you step outside.
Timings are typical. They change with the day, the number of flights landing together and the border queue.
Arriving in 2026
How long you spend between the aircraft door and your car depends on where you flew from and, for non-EU visitors, on the new EU Entry/Exit System.
EES has been fully operational across the Schengen area since 10 April 2026. If you hold a non-EU passport and are visiting for a short stay, your first entry includes a facial image and four fingerprints at a kiosk, and the record replaces the passport stamp.
EU and EFTA nationals, and non-EU nationals with a valid residence permit for an EU country, are not enrolled. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints.
Visa-exempt visitors may stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area, and the system now counts the days automatically.

Timings are typical estimates and change with the day and the number of flights landing together. ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorisation that has not yet started: check the official EU travel pages for its current status.
Security
Screening at BIO follows EU aviation rules, applied by Aena. As of August 2026 the 100 ml rule is still the rule at Spanish airports: scanner upgrades are planned for Bilbao, but follow the signs at your lane.

The airport
Bilbao Airport is small and easy to read. Here is what to expect inside it, before you walk out to your car.
Bilbao Airport sits in Loiu, about 12 km north of the city. It is the busiest airport in northern Spain, and its single terminal, designed by Santiago Calatrava and opened in 2000, is a landmark. Locals call it La Paloma, the dove, for the shape of its roof. Domestic, Schengen and non-Schengen flights all use the same building, which is why it feels simpler than a big hub.
Vueling and Volotea base aircraft here, with Iberia, Air Europa, easyJet, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Brussels Airlines, TAP, SWISS, Wizz Air, SAS, Pegasus and Turkish Airlines among roughly thirty carriers. The list changes with the season, so check your own airline.
Around 70 non-stop destinations in some two dozen countries, including Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Seville and the Canaries, and London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, Zurich, Vienna, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Kraków, Athens and Istanbul. The airport is north of the city in Loiu. The road into town runs down the BI-631 and joins the BI-20 ring road: about 12 km, normally 15–20 minutes, and 35–55 minutes if you land into the weekday rush.

Going home
People searching for a taxi to Bilbao Airport need a different answer from people arriving. Here is how to plan the ride back.
Take the time you want to be at the terminal, add the drive and add a margin. The drive from the centre is about 20 minutes in normal traffic and up to 55 minutes in the weekday rush.
The Bizkaibus A3247 from Bilbao to the airport starts at about 05:00 and the last bus is at about 22:00. For a flight before about 08:00, a taxi or a pre-booked car is the practical choice.

Bilbao rebuilt itself from a shipbuilding city into one of Europe’s great short-break destinations, and it is compact enough to cover on foot. Times are driving times from the airport terminal.

Cost check
Not for the ride into town. The airport is only about 12 km from the centre, so the transfer is short whichever way you travel. These are rough figures for planning.
About €3–4.50 per person to the city centre, depending on the source and how you pay. A Barik card lowers city fares.
About €28–33 for the whole car, which is roughly €7–8 a head for a family of four.
From €39 per car to the centre, and from €59 in a van for 4 to 7.
Ticket prices change through the year, so check the museum’s website. Under-18s often have reduced rates.
Most bars in Plaza Nueva and on Calle Ledesma charge a couple of euros a piece.
Roughly €1.50–2.50 an hour in public garages (indicative), which is why most visitors skip the hire car.
