Costs are indicative for planning and change with season, tariff and operator. Bus fares are cheaper again with a contactless ten‑travel card than paying the driver in cash.
The break-even, plainly
For two people going to Santa Cruz in daylight, the bus wins on cost and the difference is small enough that either is sensible. For three or more, or any arrival after dark, a private car is usually cheaper per head than the bus once you add the taxi you would have taken at the far end.
Going south?
If your hotel is in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas, check whether your flight can land at Tenerife South instead. TFS is about 15 km from those resorts; TFN is about 100 km. Flying into the wrong airport is the single most expensive mistake on this island.
How long it really takes to get out of TFN
Tenerife North is a single split‑level terminal — arrivals on one floor, departures on the other — which makes it fast to clear compared with most Spanish airports. What changes the clock is whether you arrived on a domestic or Schengen flight, or from outside the EU.
Arriving from Spain, the other Canary Islands or the Schengen area
Off the aircraft
Many inter‑island flights use remote stands with a short bus ride to the terminal. No passport control at all on domestic and Schengen arrivals.
Baggage reclaim
Cabin‑bag‑only passengers walk straight out. Hold luggage on a Binter or Canaryfly turnaround is usually on the belt quickly; peak‑hour bags can take 20 minutes.
Through the arrivals hall
Total realistic time from wheels down to standing outside: about 15 minutes with hand luggage, 25 with cases.
Arriving from the UK, the Americas or any non‑EU country
Walk to border control
Non‑EU nationals are directed to passport control before baggage reclaim. Have your passport, return ticket and accommodation address ready.
EES biometric registration
The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. It replaces the passport stamp with a facial image and fingerprints. Your first registration takes the longest — several minutes at the kiosk.
When it goes wrong
Canary Islands airports have seen queues stretching well past an hour on Saturday changeover days since EES went live. AENA has since told airports to divert passengers to manual stamping lanes when the biometric queue passes about 25 minutes.
Bags and out
Budget 45–75 minutes from landing to kerb on a busy non‑EU arrival, and don't book a tight onward connection.

Is Tenerife North an expensive airport?
Short answer: no, and it is usually the cheaper of Tenerife's two airports to arrive at – because of where it sits rather than what it charges. TFN is 11 km from the capital and under 10 km from La Laguna, so the transfer that actually gets you to a bed is short. The same journey from Tenerife South can be 70–90 km.
What does add up is inside the terminal. It is a compact building with a limited retail and food offer, so prices are typical Spanish airport prices rather than Canarian high-street prices. Two specifics worth knowing: the terminal is not open 24 hours – it closes overnight, roughly midnight to 05:00, and passengers are asked to leave – and metered taxis add a fixed airport supplement of around €1.70 on top of the meter, on both the day and the night tariff.

Card acceptance in Canarian taxis has improved but is still not universal, and drivers are entitled to ask for cash. There are multi‑currency ATMs in the terminal. Pre‑booked transfers sidestep this entirely – you pay online or hand over an exact agreed amount.

TFN is the island's inter-island and mainland hub; most UK and northern European package flights land at Tenerife South instead. The regular operators are Binter Canarias and Canaryfly on the Canary Islands network, plus Vueling, Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Europa to mainland Spain, TUIfly, Ryanair on selected routes, and Plus Ultra, which flies the airport's only intercontinental service to South America. Roughly 3,400–3,500 flights leave the airport each month.

Tenerife North follows standard EU aviation security rules, applied by AENA. The relaxed liquid rules that came in at Madrid, Barcelona and Palma depend on new CT scanners; TFN is not among the airports named in the priority rollout, so assume the traditional rules apply and pack accordingly.

How early should you arrive for a departure from TFN?
Two hours for inter‑island and mainland Spanish flights, three hours for anything outside the Schengen area – EES exit checks now apply on the way out as well as the way in. The terminal is small, so once you are airside there is not a great deal to do; arriving three hours early for a Binter hop to Gran Canaria is time you will not enjoy.

Access: The TF-5 motorway connects the airport directly to the north coast and Santa Cruz. The TF-24 climbs from here towards Teide National Park through the laurel forest — a road worth taking in daylight.
What's worth seeing within an hour of TFN
Northern Tenerife is the green, historic, slightly cloudier half of the island — and most visitors never see it because they land in the south. If you are arriving at Tenerife North, this is what is on your doorstep. All of it can be booked as a private car with a waiting driver.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna
The island's first capital and a World Heritage site — a grid of pastel townhouses with carved wooden balconies and interior courtyards, laid out in the 1500s and copied across Latin America. Genuinely lived‑in rather than preserved, with the island's university and its best tapas streets.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Calatrava's white Auditorio on the waterfront, the Mercado Nuestra Señora de África, the Palmetum botanical garden built on a former landfill, and in February one of the largest carnivals in the world. Also the island's cruise terminal.
Playa de las Teresitas
The capital's beach, and a curiosity: the golden sand was shipped in from the Sahara because Tenerife's own volcanic black. Sheltered, calm and full of local families rather than tour groups at weekends.
Anaga Rural Park
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of knife‑edge ridges and laurisilva — prehistoric cloud forest that once covered the Mediterranean. Hamlets like Taganana and Chamorga are reached by roads that ask a lot of a driver, which is a good argument for not driving yourself.
Puerto de la Cruz
The original Canarian resort town: black‑sand beaches, the Lago Marituze saltwater pool complex designed by César Manrique, an eighteenth‑century botanical garden, and Loro Parque just outside town.
La Orotava
A steep, handsome old town above Puerto de la Cruz, best known for the Casa de los Balcones and for the flower and volcanic‑sand carpets laid in the streets at Corpus Christi.
Teide National Park
Spain's highest point at 3,718 m, inside a 16 km caldera. Most of the park — Roques de García, the Mirador de La Ruelta, the crater floor — is free and needs no permit. See the box below before planning the summit.
Icod de los Vinos & Garachico
Icod has the Drago Milenario, a dragon tree of genuinely uncertain but enormous age. Garachico, just down the coast, was the island's main port until a 1706 eruption buried it — the lava now forms its natural rock pools.
Candelaria
The Basilica of the Virgin of Candelaria on the east coast, guarded by nine bronze Guanche kings facing the Atlantic. The island's spiritual centre and a good half‑day with a driver waiting.
Planning to climb Teide? Read this before you book anything.
The cable car runs from 2,356 m to La Rambleta at 3,555 m in about 8 minutes, and from there you can walk to the La Fortaleza and Pico Viejo viewpoints without any permit. Reaching the actual summit requires a separate free reservation for trail PNT 10 (Telesforo Bravo), capped at 200 people a day, booked through the official Tenerife ON platform. Slots open on Mondays at 07:00 Canary time and are gone quickly in summer. Since January 2026 an ecotasa fee also applies to the summit and Montaña Blanca permits, and from June 2026 smoking is banned throughout the national park. Book the permit first, then the cable car, then the car.
